Exfoliate!
Your complexion will exfoliate naturally. Your skin sheds the upper layer of skin cells regularly. Just rub your hands together vigorously and you will see what I mean. When we are young this happens quickly, on a daily basis but as we get older this action slows and the accumulated layers of dead skin cells can make the face look dull and drab. Regular use of an exfoliater of some kind is indicated. For the face it should be very gentle. The word SCRUB AND SCRUBBIE are used often when referring to a substance for cleansing the face, this is the one thing you must NEVER EVER do. It is not necessary to scrub at your face, in fact you do a great deal of damage if you do. A facial scrub should be very very fine and it should be gently massaged onto the skin with a light touch and small circular movements. Avoid the thin skin around the eyes and mouth. Natural sloughing agents can be bought from specialist suppliers such as powdered orange peel, rosehips or finely ground oatmeal. Or you can make your own at home. These can be added to a little oil or water and then used on the face. Alternatively your normal cleansing method can be augmented by using a slightly rough sponge or loofah (always wet it first) and gently wiping across the complexion. The use of a mask with the addition of
fresh fruit will also exfoliate the skin.
If you are a soap maker then it is a simple matter to create your own homemade soap recipes which will exfoliate the skin. For use on the face a
castile
soap with the addition of a little clay or finely ground almonds will do the trick. For the body or hands you could add something a little rougher such as ground pumice stone or gritty oats (stoneground whole oats...not the softer Quaker-type oats). Poppy seeds are good in soap and strawberry seeds too. In fact anything that is slightly rough in texture and wont be affected by the soap mixture is worth a try.
Oil Based Exfoliation
Choose a suitable oil for your skintype from the
skincare oils list
and add your scrubbie mixture to it. Either mix it up fresh each time you wish to use it or prepare it before hand and keep it in a jar close to the bathroom basin.
Ground Almond Facial Scrub
Tthis is most suitable for normal to dry skin types - however oily skin can also benefit from this recipe if you choose a plant oil suitable for your skin type and sebum regulating essential oils.100ml Vegetable oil of your choice. 50 gram Ground Almonds 2 drops of a
suitable essential oil blend

Gel to exfoliate Greasy Skin
Gels are great products to make - very simple to do, really useful for oily complexions when you do not wish to add any more oil to the skin and very cooling also for after-sun care etc... There will be a separate page about making natural Gels as soon as I have the time to upload it - do keep checkin g back regularly or subscribe to our rss feed so that you never miss a new page when it's uploadedThis recipe is for a small amount which should be used up straight away. If you wish to keep this for any length of time you will need to either freeze it or use a synthetic preservative. Ingredients 100grams Distilled water (or flower water or hydrosol or herbal tea - please note that if you are using herbal tea this mixture may not keep very long - consider a preservative or freezing until required) 2 grams Xanthum Gum between 5 and 10 grams ground rice 2 drops of
an appropriate essential oil or blend for your skintype.
Method Warm the water (not boiling) in a clean cooking pot and whisk in the xanthum gum. Allow to cool then add the ground rice and essential oils and stir well. Use within 24 hours or keep in the fridge for 3 days maximum (can be frozen for longer storage). To use Splash the face with warm water. Scoop a small amount of the gel mixture into the palm of your hand and using the fingers of the other hand massage onto the face with small circular motions. After a few minutes of massage rinse off with tepid water. Finish with your usual toner and follow with a moisturiser for oily skin.
I would like to make a moisturiser for oily skin
I am sorry to disappoint but at the moment there are no recipes uploaded for moisturiser for oily skin (just exfoliate and then use your normal moisturiser) but do check back regularly as we update on a daily basis.
