Facial Sauna - The Gentle Way to Deep Cleanse

A facial sauna is a gentle way to deep cleanse but it doesn't suit every skin type. It is necessary for all skin types to open pores on the face and remove build up of dirt and grime in order to keep blemishes and black heads in check.

Steaming your face should be done carefully and no more than once a week for oily skins, less frequently for normal to dry skin and probably not at all if your skin is thin or suffers with tiny red veins near the surface.

The Facial Sauna How-To Guide

Step One Boil the kettle and pour the hot water into a large bowl. This can be plain water or a mixture of water and a Hydrosol or even an infusion of herbs and flowers in boiling water. If you wish you can add a couple of drops of an appropriate essential oil for your skintype.

Step Two After washing your face carefully with soap and water or whatever your usual wash may be, tie your hair back from your face and drape a towel over your head while leaning over the hot water in the bowl. Do not lean too close as the hot steam may burn your face. Close your eyes and allow the steam to rise onto your skin for about 5 to 10 minutes. During this time the action of the steam will open pores on the face.

Step Three Taking a clean cloth or cotton wool remove any dirt from the skin. After steaming is a very good time for dealing with black heads for a full how-to see the section on coping with acne.

Step Four To close the pores again use a little tepid toner or flower water on cotton wool, plain cool spring water will work equally well. Don't imagine you have to spend a fortune on special products for this.

Step Five Gently pat dry the skin and apply a little moisturiser. Even oily skins need to moisturise. A good moisturiser hydrates the skin but does not leave it feeling greasy. See the moisturising section which will give you further information about hydrating the skin.

A Facial Sauna is too harsh for thread veined skin, try a cleansing oil instead.

Skin that has been over exposed to hydrocortisone creams can become very thin and prone to thread vein damage. You should never subject skin like this to a facial sauna. Try using a simple plant oil and massage the skin for several minutes before removing with damp cotton wool. Regular deep cleansing like this will suffice to clear blocked pores.
