Coping with an Oily T Zone and Learning to Love your Nose!

The forehead, nose and chin form what is commonly referred to as the T zone. This T zone is often remarkably more oily than the rest of the face. If you have noticed that your cheeks are dry but your nose is greasy then you definitely have an oily T-zone. The oily portion of your face needs to be treated accordingly and will benefit from any of the advice and recipes given for oily skin on this website – especially the face masks and the advice about removal of black heads.

The non-oily parts of your face need to be treated differently. This does mean that you have to faff about a bit more than your lucky sister who perhaps has normal skin all over her face. But it needn’t be too onerous.

If you use a face mask for oily skin all over then simply wash off the area of dry skin first after only 5 or 10 minutes, leaving the oily skin to receive the full 20 minute regime.

Similarly with your moisturiser. If you have an oily T zone it is not necessary to use a moisturiser on the nose if you find it causes excess-oil problems. If you are making your own toiletries then look for essential oil blends that help regulate the production of sebum in the skin.

The use of a non detergent soap may help to alleviate problems by not stripping your skin totally bare of oil - a naked skin will start to overproduce oil in order to compensate, therefore gentle washes rather than harsh detergents or astringents are recommended. A little flower water or hydrosol applied to damp cotton wool and kept in a plastic sandwich bag can be taken out and about wherever you are and used to wipe excess oil from the T zone.

The Shape of your Nose

To change the shape of your nose you need to see a plastic surgeon. It is now a very common occurrence and we think of this as more commonplace than many other surgical cosmetic procedures. To be unhappy about the shape of your nose is not a modern phenomena as this extract from a Victorian publication shows:

The Science of Rhinoplasty This science, which concerns the nose, has made such progress that it is possible now to modify, even to change, the shape of the nose. The methods employed belong to the regions of medicine.

I may, however, suggest to persons afflicted with a large nose the means of diminishing its size. To do this, it will be sufficient to wear a pince-nez, without glasses in it, at night, and in the day-time whenever you are alone.

If the nose is a little on one side, or deviates from the central line, it must be blown exclusively on the defective side until it has become straight.

In New York the society women remould their noses, so as to make them Greek, Roman, or Jewish, according to their fancy, by means of an instrument worn at night. The Ladies Dressing Room – Baroness Staffe 1893

I am not sure if it is true that New York society women went to such lengths to remould their noses but I would add a note of caution here. If all that concerns you about your nose is a minor bump or a slight imperfection and in all other respects it fulfils the functions of a nose perfectly then I would suggest that to undergo the risks of a surgical procedure unnecessarily is folly. Today it will be your nose, tomorrow it will be something else.

My personal definition of beauty is not dependent upon physical appearance so I don’t see the need for such drastic measures. If your definition of beauty is wholly physical then perhaps some kind of action to build your self esteem would help before you take the irrevocable step of going under the knife.

Here is a little advice concerning the nose which was given to me by a very wise, beautiful and intelligent woman:

To avoid your glasses steaming up when coming into a warm room from a cold outside, blow your nose just before you go in. Drips on the end of noses can be eliminated in this way also. This little gem has saved me from embarrassment many times.
